Just One Thing (JOT) series

The JOT series consists of one-hour online shared practice events, highlighting practical areas of supervisory support and CPD.

Purpose

What is JOT and what is it for?

Our main objective with the JOT series is to share compelling methods and tools, and to provide a platform in which to update Practitioner Partner leads on the piloting programme which is due to start in October 2025. As the title suggests, we aim to provide one usable idea or resource per session to support the professional development of research supervisors. This will generally be easily replicable without dependency on significant resources or equipment.

Audience

Who can attend JOT sessions?

In the first instance, JOT is only intended to enable a sharing of practice across and within the RSVP Consortium and Practitioner Partners. The current target audience is researcher developers and those supporting supervisors, and we are only advertising to our internal network at the moment.

We will evaluate the effectiveness and usefulness of the JOT series among the Practitioner Partners and use this to inform a decision about whether to create a new JOT series for the sector in the future.

Content and structure

What type of content will it include and how frequently will they run?

The current JOT series will cover a broad range of topics with sessions taking place on a monthly basis, generally the 20th day of the month, until October 2025. Each session will largely focus on one topic and may include the following type of content:

  • Practical tools to support the professional development of supervisors

  • Preparatory materials for the CPD menu

If you would like to contribute or present as part of the JOT series, please let us know by emailing rsvp-admin@york.ac.uk.
