Created using evidence
Every intervention is grounded in existing scholarship and empirical data, including supervisor focus groups and the UK Research Supervision Survey (UKRSS) - ensuring they provide data-informed and pedagogically grounded development opportunities for supervisors.
Trialled and piloted
Deliberately piloted in different contexts and within institutions with very different research cultures, the interventions have been developed and tested in at least two institutions and collaboratively refined. All the interventions can be adapted to suit different institutions, disciplines and cultures, while remaining relevant and effective.
Built around communities of practice
UKRSS data reveals that supervisors would like more opportunities to reflect on their practice or share experiences with peers - yet only 13% do. Designed to change this, our interventions prioritise peer-to-peer learning and collaborative problem-solving, and foster supportive networks beyond the session.
Practitioner Partners and our Piloting Programme
As Practitioner Partners, you are central to developing, evaluating and refining our interventions. Piloting them in your own contexts or across different countries will help us understand what works, what needs adapting, and why.
Through your feedback, we can assess the effectiveness and relevance of each intervention, exploring how approaches to supervision practice translate across diverse research cultures, disciplines, geographies and sectors.
Read our piloting guidance for Practitioner Partners for information on planning, delivering, and providing feedback on your piloting activities.
Phase 2 overview
While rooted in the same design principles and approach, our second phase of piloting is slightly different.
The Starting Strong programme was open to new research supervisors from all Practitioner Partners, with the pilot sessions delivered centrally by facilitators from the RSVP team. Practitioner Partners are not being asked to deliver their own pilots locally.
Three further interventions have been added to the Resource Hub:
Our priority for these interventions is to receive facilitator feedback on the materials themselves. The interventions have been developed by specialists in their subject areas, and perspectives from supervisors or researcher developers will valuably inform the revisions we go on to make.
Practitioner Partners may use these materials to plan and deliver local pilot sessions with their supervisors if they wish, as with the Phase 1 interventions. However, we do anticipate that many of you will not have time or capacity to fully deliver local pilots within the time available, but may have the opportunity to review the interventions themselves, and this feedback will be very welcome.
RSVP interventions
Our interventions are grouped by themes that loosely follow the doctoral lifecycle. See how our interventions map against the cycle by downloading your copy of this theme view (.PDF)
Interventions outlined in yellow in the overview below and marked with an asterisk (*) were released in 2026 as part of Phase 2.
