This workshop explores how supervisory relationships are shaped not only by what is communicated, but also by how the communication itself is addressed. Participants will be introduced to meta-communication as a practical approach to making supervision clearer, aligning expectations, and fostering collaboration. The session will focus on three main themes: recognising the ongoing need to align expectations throughout the candidature, strengthening communication in complex contexts such as team or cross-cultural supervision, and applying metacommunication as a strategy to support both researcher independence and supervisory flexibility.
Learning objectives
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
acknowledge the importance of regular alignment of expectations in supervision
recognise the vital role of clear communication in complex supervisory contexts, such as team supervision and multicultural supervision
apply meta-communication to build a collaborative supervisory relationship with clear communication.
