What does it really take to be an effective doctoral supervisor?
To build professional development that actually works, we began by listening to the people on the ground. We know that one size doesn’t fit all, and that’s why we conducted a series of focus groups in the first year of the project exploring the doctoral supervisor experience from every angle -including an unprecedented look at industry-based supervisors, the challenges faced by Deans and Directors of Doctoral Schools, and a "deep dive" into the PGR experience based on PRES data.
The first of our focus group reports is now available, and covers the voice of academic research supervisors.
These findings have directly underpinned the design of Starting Strong: A Programme for New Research Supervisors and our professional development programme for industry supervisors - ensuring that both are fully grounded in the lived experiences of those engaged in research supervision.
