Session 1: The purpose and scope of supervision
In this session we will start by thinking about what “good” supervision looks like for both you and your candidate. We will consider the changing landscape of doctoral studies and the challenges and opportunities this presents. We will examine the supervisor's multiple roles, the importance of clarifying boundaries and responsibilities, and discuss how to navigate these with confidence.
Learning objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
identify and prioritise key stakeholders and their competing expectations and needs within doctoral supervision
understand how supervisory roles, responsibilities, and boundaries change with increasing student independence
apply strategies to manage the common tensions in supervisory practice
Pre-session work
Please introduce yourself on this padlet.
Think about the question: How do you balance the time needed for quality supervision with the myriad competing work demands? Please post your reflections on the session 1 Padlet (see below)
