Starting Strong Participant Hub

This hub contains everything you need for the Starting Strong programme, including session information, preparation, and key resources.

About the programme

Over four weeks, the programme takes you through a structured developmental journey, equipping you with the foundational skills and knowledge to supervise effectively and confidently.

It begins with broader, more philosophical questions about supervision, the responsibilities and boundaries of the role, and your supervisory identity. This is followed by guidance on building effective supervisory relationships and supporting candidates’ progression, confidence, and independence. Through reflection, discussion, and learning with others, you will gain more confidence and be equipped with resources, strategies, and tools to support you beyond the programme.

If you have any questions about the programme, please contact the programme conveners: Dr Róisín Astell and Dr Julia Rayner, rsvp-piloting@york.ac.uk

Session overview

Session 1: The purpose and scope of supervision

Navigating the roles, responsibilities and competing demands required for effective doctoral supervision.

Session 3: Effective supervisory conversations

Focusing on how active listening and effective questioning can help supervisors hold clearer, more productive conversations that support doctoral candidates to think independently and make steady progress.

Session 2: Developing your supervisory identity

Understanding your own supervisor identity and unique contribution to research supervision and the wider supervisory team.

Session 4: Enabling progress and independence

Exploring practical ways to help doctoral candidates stay motivated, build confidence, navigate feedback, and move towards greater independence through clear expectations and purposeful supervisory support.

Cohort-based programme

As it is a cohort-based program, you’ll be working with the same group throughout the four weeks. This will enable you to share supervisory experiences, build relationships, and ensure continuity in learning. Additionally, you may wish to continue the conversations with your peer even after the programme ends.

Please use this Padlet to introduce yourself to your fellow cohort.
