Session 2: Developing your supervisory identity

Are you hands-on, or do you prefer to give your researchers greater autonomy? This session focuses on identifying personal supervisory style and practices. You will reflect on your strengths, ways of working with others, explore different supervisory models, and consider how to operate effectively as part of a supervisory team.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • analyse how personal values, strengths, and assumptions shape supervisory practice

  • identify their unique contributions to their supervisory team

  • compare different supervisory styles and their implications for working with doctoral researchers

  • describe their own supervisory approach in relation to recognised models of supervision

Pre-session work
  1. Before the session, complete the Strengths tool (PDF), and identify 2-3 strengths you bring to supervision.

  2. Think about the question: What is the right balance of hands-on or hands-off in supervision? Please post your reflections on the session 2 Padlet (see below)
